🧼 Cleaning & Maintenance of Your Rancilio Silvia

Routine care of your Rancilio Silvia espresso machine ensures consistently great espresso for years to come. A clean machine is just as important as a quality grinder and fresh coffee.

Coffee naturally contains oils — while they contribute to flavour and texture, they can go rancid and ruin your espresso if allowed to build up. With consistent care, your espresso quality will shine through every cup.

🗓 Daily Maintenance

  • After steaming milk, wipe the steam wand with a damp cloth reserved only for that purpose.
  • Turn on the middle (hot water) switch and flush the wand into an empty jug to clear any milk residue and re-prime the boiler.

🧹 Weekly Maintenance

Backflushing the system:

  1. Insert the blind filter (the one with no holes) into the group handle.
  2. Lock the handle into the group head as if preparing a shot.
  3. Turn on the coffee switch and let the pump run for ~10 seconds (no more than 20).
  4. If the sound changes or goes silent, turn the switch off.
  5. Remove the handle and empty the water. Repeat this process until the water runs clear.

This flushes fresh water through the group head and solenoid valve, clearing away built-up coffee residue.

Clean the group: Use a small stiff brush to scrub inside the group head.

Check the steam wand: Wipe clean and ensure the tip holes are not blocked.

Polish: Wipe down the exterior with a clean, dry cloth.

⚙️ After Every Kilo of Coffee

Deep backflush:

  1. Add ½ teaspoon of backflush powder into the blind filter.
  2. Repeat the backflushing steps above until the water runs clean into the drip tray.
  3. Repeat without powder to rinse out all residue.

Refit the regular filter basket and pull a shot — you’ll notice a cleaner, purer flavour immediately.

🧴 Cleaning the Group Handle

  1. Use a spoon or small screwdriver to pop out the filter basket from the group handle.
  2. Scrub both the basket and inside the handle with a scourer to remove black coffee oils.
  3. If there's heavy buildup, soak the handle in hot water with a teaspoon of backflush powder for 30 minutes. Then rinse thoroughly.
